Small Town and multivillage Initiatives
During the last two decades, much attention has been focused on providing adequate water and sanitation services to rural communities and urban centers; however, there is another rapidly growing population that is in need of services: the residents of small towns and villages. Many small towns have sufficient populations to benefit from the economies of scale offered by piped systems, but they are too small for conventional urban water utilities. Some villages have multi-village schemes for providing services, but the schemes are poorly implemented.
WSP's Small Towns and Multi-Village Initiatives is a world-wide effort to study what is being done in these municipalities and develop a programmatic approach to spreading the successes. Since a major part of predicted urban growth in the world is expected to come from small towns, this initiative has taken on increased importance in all regions of the world.
